Therapy Approaches
I am trained in and offer a range of therapies which can be tailored to your specific needs and wishes. Below are some of the approaches I often use in therapy.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapy is an evidence based psychological approach recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Care Excellence (NICE Guidelines) for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). It utilises eye movements and bilateral sensory stimulation to help people process underlying trauma memories which are often causing current psychological difficulties. Clinical research continues to demonstrate its effectiveness for a range of psychological difficulties.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
is a talking therapy which seeks to manage psychological difficulties by altering negative thoughts patterns and noticing how these patterns can shape your behaviour and the way you feel. It has a large evidence base and is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Care Excellence (NICE Guidelines) for both anxiety and depression.
Compassion Focused Therapy
is a therapy developed by the psychologist Paul Gilbert. Using a range of techniques such as imagery, visualisation, chairwork and mindfulness, the approach offers a way of helping people to notice how shame and self criticism are driving forces in psychological difficulties whilst developing a more compassionate and kind way of managing them.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
helps people develop skills such as cognitive defusion and mindfulness which enable them to manage difficult, often painful thoughts and feelings. It also encourages people to identify their values and take active steps towards building a rich, full and meaningful life.
